A doula is a clear mind that can assist in helping the couple achieve the birth experience they require, if possible. She recognizes birth as a key life experience that will be remembered throughout the mother's life. She understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labour. She will assist the couple in preparing for and carrying out their birth plans and facilitates communication between the medical care providers and the couple with an objective mind.
A Doula will stay with the woman during labour and often assists afterwards with breastfeeding and ensuring better bonding between the mother and baby.
